Waste and the European Commission's measures towards a circular economy

Waste management in the European Union has improved significantly in the recent decades. Although still less than half of the waste is recycled and the European economy is very dependent on the availability of resources, the reserves of which are gradually depleting.

Due to these problems, in the end of 2015 the European Commission adopted a package of measures for the so-called "Circular economy", the purpose of which is: the value of products, materials and resources to be maintained in the economy for as long as possible, the generation of waste and the use of resources to be minimized and the resources to remain in the economy when the product reaches the end of its life cycle, by being repeatedly used to create additional value.
